SPA MAINTENANCE

Spa Maintenance Checklist
BEFORE EACH USE:
  • Test your water to determine sanitizer and pH levels.
  • Add Bromine or Chlorine as needed.
  • Add pH or alkalinity adjusters if needed.
WEEKLY:
  • Add weekly maintenance chemicals in this order for best results:
    1. Add a weekly maintenance dosage of scale inhibitor.
    2. Shock the spa.
    3. Wait until sanitizer level drops below 5ppm, and then add your other maintenance chemicals, such as clarifiers, water conditioners and enzyme products.
  • Remove the filter cartridge(s) and spray them down with water at a 45-degree angle. Remove any physical debris and inspect the filters for any scale buildup or discolouration from metals. Optional - rotate with alternate set to allow filters to dry.
  • Top up the spa with water, if needed.
MONTHLY:
  • Have a free computerized water test done at Ashton Pools, Ponds & Spas. It is important to make sure the water is balanced, and a professional test will be more accurate and thorough than those done at home.
  • Remove the filter cartridges and soak in filter cleaning solution. This will eliminate any organic waste and oils, while also breaking down scale and rust buildup. Allow the filter to dry before placing it back into the hot tub.
WHEN NEEDED:
  • Drain the spa when the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level reaches 1500ppm. Expect to drain the spa about every 3-4 months, or more often if the spa is heavily used. When TDS levels get high, the water will be harder to keep clean and will eat up more chemicals. Use a pipe cleaner, like Whirlpool Rinse, at least twice per year. Clean the spa surface while the spa is empty.
  • Clean scum line if you notice one forming. Lower the level 3-4 inches below the scum line and only use a spa-cleaning product. Use an enzyme spa product or a scum bug to prevent further build-up.
  • Clean scale build-up. If you see white deposits forming on the surface of your spa, you should clean them while they are still fresh. Use a spa-specific cleaner or a vinegar and water solution to clean the spa and ensure that you are adding a scale inhibitor on a regular basis to help prevent further deposits.
  • Clean the skirt. If you have synthetic skirting, just take some mild soap and water and wipe down any dirty surfaces. Cedar skirting may need to be stained every few years to keep it looking new. Do not use a hose or pressure washer on skirting since water may get into the cabinet.
  • Clean the spa cover using a specially formulated cover cleaner (Ultrashine cover cleaner is good) or mild dish detergent and water. Do not use harsh cleaners or Armor All-type products on your spa cover. Perform this every time you drain and refill the spa. Clean inside the cover and remove and flip over your foam inserts once or twice per year.
